As a Chicagoan, I don’t always have the highest expectations for dining options outside of a large city. Since my husband and I prefer quiet travel and smaller destinations, we adapt our expectations in these markets. There was no need for adaptation in Whitefish, Montana. Whitefish Montana restaurants are diverse and delicious. No matter how picky an eater you are, Whitefish Montana restaurants have something for you. Check out my recommendations below, for where to eat in Whitefish, Montana.
For Local Gastropub Fare and a Gorgeous Rooftop…Try Casey’s and Skybar

Two restaurants under one roof, Casey’s and its rooftop Sky Bar both focus on Montana-first ingredients. A Whitefish, Montana restaurant institution, Casey’s was established as a bar for travelers coming off the railroad over 130 years ago. While of course it has changed owners, menus, and even buildings, it is still a place of feel-good familiarity as it has been for over a century.
Even on a cloudy day, you can see the mountains from Casey’s Skybar. A beautiful outdoor fireplace on Casey’s Rooftop
A Whitefish Montana Restaurant for Date Night and, if you’re Lucky, Live Music from Mike Murray: Tupelo Grille
Elk Meatloaf Sliders were the true standout of the entire night! Whitefish with Morel Mushroom Linguine was Fantastic
Tupelo Grille is one of those Whitefish, Montana restaurants that you cannot miss. Same goes for their rustic Italian restaurant, Abruzzo Italian Kitchen. If you will be visiting during the high season, that is, summer, or during ski season, I highly recommend calling for a reservation (+1 406-862-6136). While we had reservations to sit in the dining room, the melodies of Montana legend Mike Murray drew us to the lounge.
With a background of not-too-loud crooning, accompanied by a string bass and acoustic guitar, I found myself swaying to the tunes in between bites. And about those bites? Well, the elk meatloaf sliders cannot be beat. Where else can you get elk meatloaf? It’s hearty with much less fat than beef and great flavor. I would have ordered a second helping, but the catch of the day fish came with morel mushrooms. Since I fell in love with morels in Charlevoix, Michigan, I knew better than to pass those up.
Looking for Where to Eat in Whitefish Montana that is Kid Friendly? Try Ciao Mambo
With locations in Whitefish, Billings, and Missoula, Ciao Mambo is a Montana favorite. This family friendly, heavy on garlic and portion size restaurant, has all the Southern Italian classics on which you grew up. Eggplant, chicken, and veal parmesans, fire grilled pizza, and an extensive wine list mean the whole family eats well. The restaurant is lively and entertaining as pizza chefs spin dough high above their heads, as if out of an animated movie. It can get loud, and quite crowded however, so consider making a reservation for dinner.

How About A Whitefish Montana Restaurant That Specializes in Barbecue? Piggyback BBQ is it

I recommend a platter with two sides! Plenty to drink! Could you say no to these Nachos? We couldn’t either.
Piggyback BBQ is the kind of familiar place that can make anyone feel like a local. There were certainly regulars in the dining room making friendly conversation with the staff, and we easily relaxed with a huckleberry beer and great nachos. Come hungry or make sure wherever you are staying has a fridge because the portion sizes are hefty!
How About Dining with a View? Dining Options at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake Will Have you Covered

There are many different options for dining at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake, and they all have pretty fantastic views. If it’s warm and you are looking for a snack, you can sit at the café by the pool. Need to be indoors? The bar will do. Want something more formal? The Boat Club boasts direct views of the water and excellent service.
A Whitefish, Montana Restaurant that is Perfect for A Special Occasion? Café Kandahar is Your Best Bet!
An intimate dining room. The Lodge at Whitefish Lake as the setting. Tasting Menu. Just trust me on this one.
What about a Whitefish, Montana Restaurant that Specializes in Breakfast? Loula’s Café in the Historic Masonic Temple Has You Covered

Some people love going out for breakfast and brunch. They want a hearty meal that will hold them over until later in the day, or, they just want a slice of pie and some good coffee. Loula’s offers it all. I tend to order the same thing at every breakfast place I visit––two eggs, overeasy, and toast––but when there is a rotating selection of homemade pies…well, I can’t resist. Loula’s is known for their pies, and a handwritten board lists the availability of pies for the day.
How About Ice Cream? Sweet Peaks it is!

What is a meal without something sweet to finish it off? Sweet Peaks in Whitefish, Montana is a great local ice cream shop with local specialties. Coffee drinks, dog ice cream, and even chocolate covered crickets! With locations throughout Montana, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Spokane, Washington, Sweet Peaks has ice cream covered!

how about dining at cafe kandahar on whitefish mountain resort?
I hear it is great, but I haven’t been. I did include Café Kandahar and the Snug Bar in my where to drink in Whitefish post here : https://www.jaimesays.com/where-to-grab-a-drink-in-whitefish-montana/
I’d love to try Café Kandahar next time I’m there!
If you have some favorite aspects of it, I’d be happy to include it!
