How the Home Chef Menu Made Me Love Cooking Again

Some people find it incredibly easy to stick to a routine. For example, my husband keeps his weekly routine of making lunch the night beforehand and going to the gym everyday.  I wish I could say that I was as disciplined as he is, but unfortunately I’m not.  For a while, I was really good at making dinner for us about four times a week.  Then, when I moved home during my mom’s cancer treatment, she really didn’t have any sort of predictable appetite so I stopped cooking.  That behavior seeped into my habits at home with my husband. After a few months, I realized I was picking up pre-made food from the grocery store on my way home almost every night.  I decided it was time to give Home Chef a try.

Choosing my Home Chef Menu for the Week

I looked at the Home Chef menu for one week and couldn’t believe how many options there were.  Each week, the Home Chef menu offers 15 different meal options at $9.95 a serving. I repeat: there are 15 different meal options on the Home Chef menu each week! When I tried other make at home meal  services before, I hated the limited menus.  Blue Apron didn’t give me enough customization, and Eddie thought the meals were boring.  The Home Chef menu allows me to choose meals I like while also keeping dietary restrictions in mind.  Here is a shot of some upcoming meals on the Home Chef menu next week:

A preview of some of the Home Chef menu this week. Notice allergens listed, options like two or four servings, and the variety of the menu.

What about if you are looking for heart healthy, vegetarian, or carb conscious options?  There are items on the Home Chef menu for you!  Just look for the heart, leaf, and bread symbols under the Home Chef menu items. And, if you don’t want to make dinner, the Home Chef menu offers multiple “5 Minute Lunches.”  These recipes are a great way to be healthier, save money, and add variety to your normal lunch routine.

Receiving my Home Chef Delivery

After picking out my Home Chef menu, my Home Chef box arrived.

I finalized my order for three, two-serving meals on a Friday, and elected for the Tuesday delivery option.  You can choose between a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday delivery option. When I received the box, I wondered, was this the disruption I needed to get me out of my prepared foods rut?  Opening the box, I found three perfectly packaged plastic bags with handles, containing the ingredients for each meal.  I chose meals that I would never think of making on my own: an artichoke and spinach roasted chicken breast, steak with tomato marsala sauce, and french onion shrimp and grits.  Each of these Home Chef menu options really broke up the boring routine of the five or so go-to meals that I previously turned to.

Convenient packaging to take your Home Chef meal to go.

I loved that the packages for each meal came in a to-go style bag.  With three meals, I was keeping two at home and taking one to make dinner for my mom.  Home Chef makes it easy to make the meals at home, or to bring them to a friend or significant others’ house.  What better way to get together with your friends than to share a home cooked meal?

Time to start dinner.

I’ll admit it: I don’t have great knife skills and I take a while trying to find the right liquids and spices in my cramped pantry. Not so with Home Chef.  The ingredients are perfectly proportioned and supplied so that you have everything you need.  No need for measuring cups or last minute runs to the grocery store.  Not only that, but there are step by step instructions along with photos so that you can check your work during the whole meal making process.

Roasted broccoli and radishes to accompany artichoke and spinach chicken breasts.

My favorite of all of the meals I received for the week was the spinach and artichoke chicken.  I was so glad that I chose to make that meal for my mom.  Now that she is done with chemo, to be able to help her with some of the joys of life, rather than the trials, is so fulfilling. My mom absolutely loved it and we both got a little misty talking about how nice it is that we can enjoy a meal together again. It was such a good meal, in fact, that I took the Home Chef menu recipe back home and recreated the meal for my husband. I’m grateful that just a single delivery of Home Chef has jump started my desire to cook again and to show love to my family and friends through the act of sharing a meal.  Since I can start or pause my account at any time, I know I’ll use Home Chef again once my summer travel winds down. I love Korean food and only recently started getting gutsy enough to try it in the kitchen. Maybe we can share it! 🙂
